Relationship Building as a Commercial Strategy

Throughout more than 14 years in the industry, I have learned that much of our work in commercial and account management roles does not always appear on a timeline: a difficult conversation that no one really wants to have, the trust required to tell a client something they were not expecting to hear, or the ability to make a decision during a challenging moment.

In situations like these, one thing has consistently been at the core of my role over the years: building strong relationships, both with our clients and with our internal teams.

This brings me to a question I want to explore in this article:

Why can a strong agency-client relationship be just as important as the work we deliver?

Drawing on his experience leading strategic relationships between brands and teams, Nicolas Ropero, Sr. Account Director at Asylum Marketing, has seen firsthand that a strong client relationship goes far beyond the day-to-day management of an account. His approach is rooted in understanding the business, anticipating needs and building the trust required to turn relationships into a strategic tool that strengthens decision-making and results.

The Agency-Client Relationship Is Also a Strategic Tool

At Asylum, we believe strong relationships are built through work, results and a deep understanding of both the brand and the business.

Some of the principles that have worked for us include:

  1. Developing a deep understanding of the business.
  2. Understanding the priorities of both the organization and the teams we work with.
  3. Embracing the company’s objectives as our own: when our clients grow, we grow.
  4. Interpreting needs, particularly when they have not yet been fully expressed or clearly defined.
  5. Looking after the best interests of both the client and the business.
  6. Acting as an integrator who connects different internal teams to generate greater value through our work.

Many people think of relationship building primarily from a social perspective. But building strong professional relationships requires judgment, knowledge, active listening and the ability to make decisions.

That is what turns relationship building into a strategic tool for delivering results.

Trust Is Built Through Everyday Work

Trust between an agency and a client does not happen overnight. It is built through consistent actions:

  1. Delivering on what we promise.
  2. Being proactive even when there is no specific brief.
  3. Anticipating needs.
  4. Acknowledging mistakes when they happen while always bringing an action plan and a potential solution.
  5. Remaining consistent without falling into autopilot or becoming too comfortable.

The Relationship That Survives a Crisis Is Built Before the Crisis

The trust that allows an agency-client relationship to navigate a difficult situation is not built during the crisis. It is built beforehand: through every conversation, every deliverable and every commitment fulfilled.

When there is a strong relationship in place, a delay, a difference of opinion or an opportunity for improvement can be discussed from a position of mutual understanding rather than mistrust.

The true strength of a professional relationship becomes particularly visible when things do not go exactly as planned.

A Strong Client Relationship Does Not Mean Always Agreeing

From my experience, having a strong relationship with a client does not mean agreeing to every request.

It also means having the trust and judgment required to:

  1. Challenge a request when necessary.
  2. Stand behind a strategic recommendation.
  3. Be transparent when a deadline is not feasible and negotiate an alternative.
  4. Recognize when we, as an agency, have opportunities to improve.

Relationship building is not about being agreeable at all costs.

A strong professional relationship creates room to discuss, challenge and make difficult decisions without damaging the partnership.

Trust Strengthens Strategy, Creativity and Results

As a Sr. Account Director with several years of experience in the industry, I believe the strongest agency-client relationships are not the ones that never encounter difficulties.

They are the ones in which both sides have built enough trust to speak openly and clearly when challenges arise.

Relationship building does not replace strategy, creativity or results.

It makes them possible, strengthens them and helps protect them during the most challenging moments.
